Today, I went to Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture. Izumo is famously known as the god of matchmaking. Among other things, it is popular among young women as it is said that they will be able to be happily married if they pray at the shrine.

今日きょうは島根しまね県けんの出雲いずも大社たいしゃを訪たずねた。出雲いずも大社たいしゃは縁結えんむすびの神様かみさまとして有名ゆうめいだ。出雲いずもの神様かみさまにお願ねがいすると幸しあわせな結婚けっこんができると言いわれているので、若わかい女性じょせいには特とくに人気にんきがあるみたいだ。

In October, it is said that all the gods gather at Izumo Taisha. So, other than Izumo Taisha, there are no gods anywhere else in the country, so the month is called “神無月”, (Kannazuki or Kaminazuki) which directly translates as “the month with no gods”. In the Izumo province, it is called “神有月”, (Kamiarizuki), which would directly translate as “the month with gods”. So I actually wanted to go in October when all the gods were there…

日本にっぽんの暦こよみには、それぞれの月つきに和風わふうの名前なまえがついているんだ。本来ほんらいは旧きゅう暦れきによる月つきの名前なまえだから、そのまま現在げんざいの暦こよみに当あてはめると時期じきが合あわなくなるけれど、現在げんざいでもよく使つかわれている。現在げんざいの10月がつの暦こよみには、”神無月かんなづき”と載のっているものもある。旧きゅう暦れきの名前なまえだから実際じっさいは１１月頃がつごろのことだけれど。”神無月かんなづき”は字じのごとく神様かみさまのいない月つきという意味いみ。なぜなら、神様かみさまはこの時期じき出雲いずもに集あつまるとされているから。なので出雲いずも地方ちほうだけは”神在かみあり月つき”となっているんだ。本当ほんとうは、僕ぼくも神様かみさま達たちに会あいに、その頃ころに出雲いずもに来きたかったんだけどなあ。

The Kagura-den has the largest shimenawa, which is a sacred straw rope, in Japan. The shimenawa is 13.5 meters long and weighs around 5 tons. The rope is a highly recognized and distinctive feature of Izumo-taisha.

神楽かぐら殿でんには日本にほん最大さいだいの注連縄しめなわがある。注連縄しめなわは長ながさ13.5メートル、重おもさ約やく5トン。出雲いずも大社たいしゃの注連縄しめなわは、とても有名ゆうめいである。

I had Izumo soba, which is a famous soba, and it was really delicious and reasonable.

出雲いずも蕎麦そばも有名ゆうめいなので食たべてみた。手頃てごろな料金りょうきんでとても美味おいしかった。

Tomorrow, I will go to Adachi Museum, which is also in Shimane Prefecture.
