During the Obon season in Tokyo, lanterns are floated to offer memorial services for those who died in the rivers during the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raid. Memorial services are also held for those who lost their lives in accidents in the sea or rivers and recent earthquakes. The lanterns with their respective prayers on them flowing slowly down the river, illuminating the surface of the river, is very beautiful and enchanting.

東京とうきょうでは、お盆ぼんの時期じきに灯籠とうろうを流ながして、関東かんとう大震災だいしんさいや東京とうきょう大空襲だいくうしゅうの際さいに河川かせんで亡なくなられた方々かたがたを、供養くようします。 水難事故すいなんじこや近年きんねん発生はっせいした震災しんさいで亡なくなられた方々かたがたの供養くようも、あわせておこなわれます　。それぞれの想おもいを乗のせた灯籠とうろうが、川面かわもを照てらしつつ、ゆったりと流ながれ行ゆく様さまは、とても美うつくしく幻想げんそう的てきです。

On August 10, the lantern floating ceremony will be held on the Sumida River in Asakusa. Here are some photos from last year.

今年ことしの8月10日には、浅草あさくさの隅田川すみだがわで、灯篭流とうろうながしがおこなわれます。写真しゃしんは、昨年さくねんの8月12日のものです。
